A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
