EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal news:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
