Officers stated they were alerted by a resident who found a vehicle in Hanau smeared with red-colored substance

Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.

Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Police then discovered numerous other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement state preliminary tests show the substance was probably human blood.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; investigators are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the incident" and have asked to the community for tips.

A senior official stated the vandalism made him stunned and required to be resolved quickly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
