Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
