Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
